History

Apostolic Christian Resthaven was incorporated in 1965 through the proceeds of a will from a member of the Apostolic Christian Church of Elgin.  After extensive research, planning and building, the first Resthaven was licensed for 31 sheltered care (supportive) beds.  After 11½ years at Bode Rd. in Elgin, Resthaven was sold on December 1, 1983 with the church’s intention to build a 49-bed skilled/ intermediate care facility on Elgin’s west countryside.  Construction began in August 1984 and was completed in October 1985.  The first resident was admitted to the new Apostolic Christian Resthaven on November 12, 1985.   Twelve apartments were opened on April 15, 1986.  One additional nursing care bed and a completed in-house laundry was added in May 1988.  On January 1, 1991, six additional apartments were opened with garages.

Facilities

Apostolic Christian Resthaven is located on Elgin’s far west side.  The property was annexed by the Apostolic Christian Church to the city of Elgin and is served by city water and sewer.  Hot water gas heat and central air conditioning serve the facility in winter and summer for residents’ comfort.

The mostly brick building with cedar trim is located on a spacious country setting surrounded by 200-year old oak trees on the west and north, a church and rich farm land to the east, and residential homes across the road to the south.  Eighteen congregate living units for the elderly with garages are attached to the north side of the nursing home.  A 1½ acre pond, stocked with bass and bluegill, is situated to the north of the facility and parking area.

The unique New England architecture with its country setting and furnishings gives Resthaven a truly warm, home-like atmosphere.  Resthaven is licensed by the State of Illinois Department of Public Health for 50 beds, four private rooms and 46 semi-private beds.  Skilled or intermediate nursing care is provided to both men and women.  In order to help residents participate in some of the activities, which they enjoyed in the community, Resthaven also has:

Beauty Parlor/ Barber Shop, which provides all the services of a larger shop.

Gift shop, offering toiletries, craft items, candy and small gifts.

Resident Lounge, which holds a piano, bird aviary, rockers, love seats and small aquarium.

Our congregate living apartments include a lovely dining room, two spacious sunrooms enclosed in glass with a view of the grounds, and laundry facilities.

Spiritual Programs/ Activities/ Social Services

Apostolic Christian Resthaven established by the Apostolic Christian Church of Elgin, places emphasis on the spiritual needs of our residents.  With this thought in mind, we offer a number of spiritual programs for our residents.  These include church services on Sunday morning and afternoon and Wednesday evening, along with weekly Bible study and hymn sings.  Throughout the year, various local church groups hold special singings for our residents.  Our mission at Resthaven is based largely upon a theme consisting of the Christian principals of providing love, support and assistance to those we serve.

An exciting activity program is offered by Resthaven that provides a wide range of activities for all residents.  Specialized groups from the community allow the continuation of various interests and hobbies of residents.  Arts and crafts provide an opportunity to get in touch with one’s creative self, and experience the satisfaction and beauty of making and doing.  Our unique, warmly decorated halls display the beauty that craft items can give.  A full range of other activities is provided seven days a week, which satisfy the social and recreational needs of the residents.  These include games, singings, exercises, parties, music, current events and pet therapy.  Special events include picnicking and fishing on our beautiful grounds, community shopping/dining out and holiday/birthday parties.  Each resident’s room is equipped with TV antenna hook-up and telephone jacks for the resident’s convenience.

Resthaven also provides for the resident’s social and emotional needs in another way.  A well-trained Social Service Designee is employed to carefully explain all the details of “Life at Resthaven” to both potential residents and their families, while gathering information that is essential for a smooth transition to residency.  The Social Service Designee also consults on a regular basis with residents and families on their special problems, concerns and questions while serving as Resthaven’s representative at Resident Advisory Council meetings.  The council is comprised of residents who desire to have a say in Resthaven’s policies that affect their lives.  To assure that high quality up-to-date services are offered to our residents, Resthaven has a Mastered Social Worker and recreational Therapist with several years of geriatric experience to consult to our Social Service Designee and Activity director.
